Don Mattingly conference call

October
30

Here is the audio from the Don Mattingly conference call. As you would expect, Don handled himself in a classy way and said the right things.

When asked about the Dodgers, Mattingly ducked the questions. But that is what you have to do when something is about to happpen.

Mattingly said he felt no ill will to the Yankees. I was surprised to hear that they offered him the bench coach job. But he turned it down knowing it would be an uncomfortable situation.

Part 1 of the call:

Part 2 of the call:

Mattingly said he still wanted to become a manager. He may prove to be the luckiest guy in this thing. Joe Girardi will have a tough task replacing Joe Torre. Perhaps one day down the road, Mattingly will be back in pinstripes.

Dodgers conference call at 7 PM EST

  2. EY

I am sure that Donnie Baseball will be back in pinstripes one day.

  3. Rockin' Rich

Thanks for doing this, Peter. Really appreciate the effort. You are the man!

  4. E-ROC

LOL, Torre is undecided on the Dodger’s managerial job. It would be f-ed up if he said ”no”.

  5. csano

It’s times like this that I wish you had an intern to transcribe all of the audio content that you post on this site.

  6. J-Dawg

Hopefully Donnie will be back sometime down the road. LA would probably be a good fit for him while being Torre’s bench coach. Pittsburgh still has an opening, but that is not a good situation. Rumor has it that Torre was asked about the Pirates’ opening and he said “but I don’t wanna be a Pirate!”

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

E-Roc: I think that would defy everything

  8. JDnotDrew

Pete- Did you jump the gun on the Torre - Dodgers deal or are they just easing Little out the door? Conflicting reports have been made but I always concider your stuff on the mark.

  9. Sparky O

Why is A-Flop still on the yankees roster on thier website…he’s no longer on the team UH Good Bye

  10. Jeff NJ

Good point Peter, it would be ironic if Donnie comes back in 3 or 4 years when the team is hitting it’s stride. The odds are a bit slim though, but I’ll guess we’ll see.

  11. nate c.

    Pete-
Torre could decide to become a clown for all I care. It wouldn’t take away an ounce of your Credibility. You have your sources, they told you something, you gave the scoop.

  12. Brayden

I wonder if Derek Jeter will ever become manager of the Yankees?

  13. Joe G is the man

You highly underestimate Joe Girardi. Joe, if you have ever listened to him, has a great understanding of the fundamentals of baseball and isn’t scared to push guys to play tough and do what it takes to win. Girardi has a far superior team now. The Marlins were a below average team with a couple of greats mixed in. If Cashman puts together a decent bullpen, expect to see a fun and exciting season next year. He is aggressive and isn’t scared to take risks to win games and that is what win games. If you go by numbers alone, you miss out on a lot.

Torre did what he had to do and he did a fine job, but when you have a 200million payroll it’s kinda hard not to win games. He did great winning over the players as why Giambi and Damon were fine with their diminished roles on the team.
Now without ARod there taking away the spotlight, expect to see the team improve just from that. Believe me when I say, losing ARod isn’t as bad as it seems. He certainly contributed, but he didn’t carry the team and with a improved starting rotation you make up for the loss of ARod with some extra.

Yankees won without ARod as have all the other teams he has been on. No team has really gotten far with ARod. They called him ‘the cooler’ in Texas for a reason.

Guidry leaving is wonderful as well. Expect to see great things next season and Mattingly will never be Yankees manager EVER! No other team wants him for a reason and a great reason. He isn’t a manager. He is nothing more than a batting coach and nothing more. Aggressive coaches get the job done.

  14. JeremyM

Yeah, but they also called Dalton from RoadHouse the “Cooler”, and that guy was bad-a$$.

  15. mel

Loving the audio. Thanks, Pete. Donnie sounds like a good guy. Best of luck.

Something interesting. In Torre’s whole tenure with the Yankees, Wang was the only young pitcher he developed.

  16. Drive 4-5

I don’t think anyone characterizes Terry Francona as aggressive but he’s gotten the job done.

  17. Rockin' Rich

I am so relieved that Donnie will not be rooting for the Redsocks!

    THAT’S the money quote.

    (LOL!)

  18. Joe G is the man

Well in Texas, his teammates called him ‘the cooler’ cause he would cool down hot streaks the Rangers were having.
They got rid of ARod for a reason and it wasn’t to save on salary. No team he has been on has liked having him. No fans of any team he has been on have liked him. Yankees fans were duped this past season and he showed his appreciation by leaving. He is a class A phony and I wish all the luck to whatever team gets him next. He may be a great player, but his personality ruins it as well as his crumbling under pressure. He is a mental case. The Yankees got stronger by ARod opting out as well as having more money to spend on pitching.

  19. Pocono Chris

In case anyone hasn’t seen yet. Little is out in LA.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    mel: What about Pettitte?

  21. Misi

Just wanted to thank you Peter - you really provide a special service to the fans. Donnie always was and continues to be a mensch. If he and Torre go together as is being reported, I hope it’s a successful endeavor - well, not WS successful. Actually, I’d like to see him manage a college team or something so he would be field tested prepared when he comes back.
Jeter will never manage - he has too much $$ and has already stated he would like to own a team or I guess, be partial owner of a team.
As part of A-Rod’s contract he was entitled to a link to the Yankee website. I noticed last night that link is still there. This is unusual because the day that Joe Torre turned down the managerial job all #6 Yankees Jerseys were removed from The Yankees Stores.
Grady Little resigned according to the LA papers!

  22. J-Dawg

That would make two firings for Grady. It’s no small feat for Little to stay employed.

  23. whoa

This tough task following Torre stuff is such nonsense.

As Cashman said: *”The manager is only as good as the talent on the roster.”*

Why is that so hard to understand?

  24. mel

    Rebecca,

He’d already pitched a year before Torre got there. It’s in this article about Girardi. Talking about how it’ll be tough with the young pitching studs.

  25. YANKEE BIAS

When asked a question about whether he felt “cheated” by the organization he answered:

“Trust me, I’m not going to all of the sudden root for the Red Sox.”

He was also asked a question about boycotting the Yankees on things like Old-Timers Day and he flat out said “no” and he “had no hard feelings” toward the Yankee organization. He went on to add:

“If the Yankees are playing Boston, trust me, I’m rooting for the Yankees.”

That’s why Don Mattingly is and always will be my favorite, all-time Yankee.

  26. Joe G is the man

And Torre has hinted that he won’t return and has negative feelings towards the Yankees, which just hurts the fans in the end and why Torre isn’t a true Yankee and Mattingly is.
Good Riddance Torre and ARod. You two are meant for each other.

Mattingly is a great Yankee, just not a manager and he should have taken the bench coach job as he needs experience.

The LA conference call is a mess… it’s really funny to listen to. Kinda symbolic of the year ahead for the Dodgers if you ask me. Now we will truly see Torre’s worth as a manager without a 200 million payroll and Allstars all around.

  27. For the Love of the Yankees

    Thanks again, Peter…you ROCK !

  28. Froggy Doggy

Wow…..most arrogant move in the history of baseball(other than Rafy Palmiero lying about roids while testifying before Congress). Game 4, Sox(can’t even spell Socks right)about to win the Series and these jokers announce free-agency after sending a text and leaving a voicemail for Yankees brass(for the record I think the Steinbrenners don’t have all of their dogs barking). Then they claim it’s not about the money, but about the transition of the team. DO THESE YO-YO’S THINK WE ARE ALL STUPID. As a Yankee fan…good ridance to A-Rod…the least clutch and most overpaid Yankee of all time!

  29. SJ44

The LA conference call was comical. Man, they gotta rehearse it better! lol

Nobody is buying what Grady and Colletti are smoking.

Torre is going to need all his diplomacy skills in LA. That team is a mess.

As far as Donnie is concerned, he is pure class all the way. The fact that he isn’t holding the Yankees hostage with any boycott talk or any of that nonsense is why he will always be popular with the fans.

Arod could take a lesson as to how to treat the media and fan base from Donnie. It would serve him well at his next stop.

  30. Samples

Donnie Baseball, always has been, and always will be a class act. I think people underestimate him and hopefully he’ll get his shot someday soon, and maybe find his way back home down the line. After Joe G wins a few rings of course….

  31. Chris

Let it go Pete. Joe G was clearly the better candidate. He won’t fail as much as you would like him to.

  32. Jeter's Future Wife

any word on Kevin Long yet? I didn’t listen to the conference calls…

any other players speaking out anywhere other than Damon and Cano?

  33. Tucson Ken

I am thrilled about hiring of Joe G. Can’t beat a knowledgeable, take charge, demanding taskmasker catcher for our manager. His Marlin players, young& old liked playing for him even though he was demanding. I know he will let us to bring across so many of hose baserunners we squandered last year waiting for a big hit. With A-Rod’s $ available to buy bullpen guys who can thw a strike, get batters out, & not make us cringe when they enter a game, the futur looks bright. Joe G. can become a great manager IMO, even better than Torre was.

Loved how classy & honest Donnie B. was. So much forall that idle speculation that he would feel betrayed &abused
and leavethe Yankee fold forever. Way to go Donnie, hope things work ou well for you.
