Update on Mariano Rivera

September
17

Well, it seems Eric Gagne finally did something positive for the Red Sox. He injured Mariano Rivera.

As Rivera was stretching in the bullpen in the eighth inning last night, he was struck by an errant toss from Gagne, who was warming up in the adjacent bullpen.

The ball struck his right pinky finger. The finger was bruised and numb as Rivera pitched, which explains his lack of control on the ninth inning.

Rivera said today that he is fine and available.

    that’s awfully interesting

kudos to Mo for still getting out of the inning, injury and all.

i can’t stand ballparks with bullpens that aren’t separated and divided from the field and eachother. Philly’s Michael Bourn missed two months this season because he tripped over the rubber at Wrigley.

Another reason to hate Gagne and the red soxs, let me add it to the long list. :(

    Just heard the lineup
Damon in center, and Dougie at first. Otherwise normal lineup.

How high is the wall between the pens? Can we turely say it was an accident?

  4. JRVJ

    Got to agree with Franklyn.

I assume this all happened in good faith (i.e., this was an accident), but you have to hand it to Mariano for getting through that 9th inning with a numb finger on his pitching hand.

  5. Jeff NJ

Gagne’s aim is not that good. No way he could have done that if he wanted to. Mo will be fine. Let’s not overblow this.

  6. marc

WFAN just reported that Damon in CF, Matsui in Left, Giambi DH, Minky at first.

  7. shinkou

How does that affect Mo’s pitching? I thought his cutter was thrown with just his middle finger and the four-seam with just his index and middle? I guess it affects his whole hand in general?

  8. TKinDC

Might we have a little Melky foot-first slide discipline going on???

    Let’s hope so.

  9. marc

Well you knew Minky was getting another shot.

  10. SJ44

Another reason why that ballpark should be blown up.

You should never be able to have bullpens so close to one another, something like this can even be a possibility.

Glad Mo is ok but that was pretty scary.

  11. Gayle

Melky needs a day of he has been slumping and with the tampa runners coming up we need him to be fresh and focused

  12. jennifer 27 in 07

From what I understand his hand was numb. He must have taken quite a shot on his finger.

  13. Bob Michaels

Before the incident, Mo gave Gagne the FINGER!

  14. mel

Was Farnsworth available? If Mo had no feeling in the hand, then Kyle should’ve gone for the save.

  15. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

Mo is the embodiment of TOUGH ALL DAY.

Not very big on Damon in center, but Melky needs a day off.

  16. mel

Did Gagne at least apologize? Was this written up in the Boston papers?

Next time they meet, have Joba do the same to Palpelbon.

  18. S.o.S.27

It seems that Damon throw harder in left than in center. Is that an optical illusion or what?

re-sign doug m. for next year. His glove is still great for a late inning defensive replacement. Who knows how Phillips wrist turns out.

  19. S.o.S.27

I mentioned this a couple days ago and after watching this series I have to mention it again. Lowell at first next year? The guy kills us everytime we play them. He is probably the m.v.p. for boston this year. Besides supposidly being a good clubhouse guy.

  20. JDT

It should be Jeter at first, ARod at short, Lowell at third.

  21. Sara

FARNSWORTH???????????? If Joe Torre put Farnsworth in against the Sux in the ninth inning with a two run lead he would have been fired on the spot! If anything leave Joba in…never FARNSY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. nyyfaninlaaland

No warning, no suspension for Gagne?

  23. ...

I don’t know if anyone else saw this…

But I think Joba or Ian Kennedy were warming up and the bullpen catcher threw it over one of their heads and into the crowd haha… i wonder if anyone got hurt. It happened right as the broadcast switched to the bullpen cam.

  24. Reflaxion

Lowell is awful outside of Fenway. No thanks.

  25. Mike NYY

Unbelievable, especially if they had won

  26. Boston Dave

Lowell is having a career year in a contract year (AGAIN - last time with florida)… what a shocker!! he seems like a good guy but I wouldn’t trust giving him big money for 3-4 years - if he would even sign with NY.

  27. MoreRun

It’s really good news if Rivera’s lack of contral was due to an injury caused by Gagne.

  28. Denise G

did you just see Giambi truckin around 3rd and gunnin for home, AND SCORE? how funny was that, maybe he’s a step faster than Big Papi!

I have no doubt it was not an accident- Paaalleessse! IF that was an accident, then Beckett hitting Giambi was just an early christmas card…..
