Pregame chatter: The Yankees are 7-9 against lefty starters, but 6-2 at home against them. … The Yankees lead the series against the Mets 33-24. … Another good outing for AA right-hander Alan Horne last night as he allowed one earned run in seven innings against Connecticut. He is 6-3 with a 2.50. Trenton has a heck of a rotation now with Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy joining Horne, Brett Smith and Jeff Marquez. … The Yankees, for reasons that escape me, will not announce what draft picks they have signed. There is such a disconnect with Tampa and New York at times.
What’s happening with the Mets? Keep an eye on the LoHud Mets blog.
UPDATE, 6:39 p.m.: Some breaking news here. Johnny Damon is out with an abdominal strain. Cabrera will bat first and Josh Phelps will DH and hit eighth. The Mets and Yankees are spending roughly $315 million this season and their lineups tonight include Julio Franco, Carlos Gomez, Jose Valentin, Miguel Cairo and Josh Phelps.
UPDATE, 6:45 p.m.: Here is a selection of Joe Torre’s pre-game meeting with the media this afternoon:
UPDATE, 7:00 p.m.: You take an elevator from the press room in the basement up to the loge level where the press box is. When it stopped at the lobby just now, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger got on. He’s 84 and looks pretty good. Nobody said anything to him. Then again, what are you supposed to say? “So, Bangladesh, you really messed that up.”
It reminded me of the 1996 Olympics when i got an elevator at the main stadium and Muhammad Ali got on. Everybody was just looking at him. Finally Ali said, “Don’t everybody talk at once.” Kissinger is no Ali, but a brush with celebrity is always interesting.
UPDATE, 8:00 p.m.: The Mets are being very aggressive against Clemens, stealing bases and putting down bunts. It’s what a team in a losing streak should be doing. Playing against the Yankees is probably the best thing for them in terms of getting some energy back.
As for the Yankees, Oliver Perez has put-away stuff as evidenced by his four strikeouts. But when he loses it, it tends to fall apart in a hurry. Clemens needs to keep them in it until then.
UPDATE, 8:11 p.m.: Clemens is going to get hit this year and he’s going to pitch around certain guys. But he’s very good at minimizing the damage with men on base. His ability to focus on the batter and get the out he needs is impressive. He never gives in when he has somebody on the hook, he repeats his delivery and hammers strikes. It’s the kind of thing every pitcher strives to do but it’s so difficult.
UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.: This from the AP: When 48-year-old Julio Franco flied out against 44-year-old Roger Clemens ending the second, they became the oldest batter-pitcher matchup in the major leagues since Nick Altrock of the Washington Senators hit a comebacker off the Philadelphia Athletics’ Rube Walberg in the 11th inning on Oct. 1, 1933, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Altrock was 57 and hadn’t played since 1919. It was the final game of his major league career, and Washington¹s final game of the regular season. Walberg was 37.
Clemens and Franco totaled 93 years, 246 days, while Altrock and Walberg added to 94 years, 80 days.
How cool is that?
UPDATE, 8:39 p.m.: I covered the Mets from 2002-05 for my paper and saw Jose Reyes when he came up. I loved his game then, even though some people at the time questioned his heart. He’s going to be an MVP someday and maybe someday soon. Once he got over his injury problems, he became one of the best players in the game. Reyes is certainly not Jeter yet, but he gets a little closer every year.
UPDATE, 9:00 p.m.: You’d sign up for 6 6 2 2 1 8 from Clemens every time. The Yankees have give him some support now.
UPDATE, 9:43 p.m.: You have to hand it to Oliver Perez, he pitched a great game. This could be their shot given who they have at the bottom of the order tonight.
UPDATE, 9:48 p.m.: Man, the Yankees have ripped some balls and gotten nothing for it. Abreu there, Matsui in the sixth, etc. If this were the ninth inning, I’d say A-Rod clocks one. But in the eighth inning? He certainly is due tonight.
UPDATE, 10:06 p.m.: That makes 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings for the Yankees’ bullpen. The pitching has been magnificent.
UPDATE, 10:09 p.m.: Lot of Mets fans making noise here now. Tough loss for the Yankees. Now they need the kid to pitch well against Glavine tomorrow if they want to take the series.
Back later with some audio.

Today’s Front Pages —- >>> “here”:http://tinyurl.com/36oczj
I realized that this isn’t an official release, but a bunch of places around the net are listing the currently signed draftees.
take it FWIW:
http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/
EJ at Pending Pinstripes has an unofficial list of draft signers. http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/
i’m glad to see damon dh’ing tonight . big trouble for olie perez .
Krum and Wehrle signing are surprises. Not that they signed but, they signed this soon. Its was thought they would be tough signs. Had to be above the slot for those guys and that’s ok by me.
Will be interesting to see how they make out with Suttle, Angelini, Carpenter and Peavey. If they can sign 3 of those 4 (I believe they will sign Brackman), its a successful draft.
What about Kei?
Kei Igawa surrendered one run in six innings in a win for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Igawa now has a 1.80 ERA and a 21/6 K/BB ratio in 20 innings this month.
LETS GO YANKEES!!!!
bleeckerandsullivan.com,
what is your site all about. i’m afraid to look at it while at work.
I just did… He sells novelty t-shirts.
From a previous, now dead, thread. Stop advocating for Andy Phillips:
Andy Phillips is a joke. He is not a substantial improvement on Cairo. His career OPS is 657, and it would be a lot lower if he hadn’t had three good weeks at the plate in 2006. He had a great June last year. He, Shane Spencer, and Kevin Maas can tell their kids about the fun times they had raking at Yankee Stadium. But those three weeks obscure the fact that he really, really sucks.
Outside of June, here are his 2006 numbers:
.203/.257/.305
a whopping OPS of 562. That’s pathetic. And it’s in line with his career stats.
Cont’d:
Miguel Cairo’s career OPS is 674. That’s pretty bad.
Andy Phillips’s career OPS entering this year is 879. But that’s in the minors. And he’s 30 years old, so he’s not getting any better.
Josh Phelps has a career OPS of 809. He’s a comically bad defender. But he should get a few more regular ABs.
Andy Phillips should gets lots and lots and lots of ABs. In Scranton.
Hey Pete,
I thought the Yanks had until Aug. 15th to sign their draft picks… It sounded like the Yanks selected a bunch of kids who either had a really difficult agent or had committed to college scholarships and weren’t going to sign any of them in a timely manner. Or have you heard rumors of possible signings?
I’d rather Andy Phillips over Phelps. Phelps is close to becoming a liability out there 1B. Also Phillips has more value in that he can play 2B and 3B as well.
Clemens will bang his fist!
But that’s the point, Global Warming:
Andy Phillips plays one of the easiest positions well. But he kills the team at the plate. Here are some people who had better hitting stats than Phillips last year (minus June):
Tom Glavine
Carlos Zambrano
Mark Mulder
SJ:
How long can the Yankees get away with paying above slot before the Commissioner’s Office dispatches the Competition Police to the Bronx to put a stop to it?
John Thomson
Dontrelle Willis
Livan Hernandez
Eric Milton
Chan Ho Park
In summary, if Andy Phillips could pitch, he’d be a good-hitting pitcher.
Halfz what do you think we should do at 1B?
Stay with Cairo? Trade for somebody? Go dig somebody up from the minors? Etc
I personally think they should stick with Cairo until Alphabet Soup comes back. Then DFA Phelps and platoon Cairo and Doug M together. With this lineup offense shouldn’t be too much of a concern at 1B. Defense at first is key.
Instead of messing around and trying to find a 1B at the deadline, we need to find a reliever.
Lastly I hope to god they don’t try Damon at 1B. We don’t have the luxury to fool around and experiment in the middle of the season.
Horne pitched two nights ago… Brett Smith pitched last night god Pete get your facts straight
doubt we’d platoon 2 lefties at the same position.
minky will go back to first once healed. not sure if they’ll keep this phelps exiperiment going though.
I have seen Phelps in the field. It’s a joke. I’d like to know how many runs he actually costs, though. I know that he creates 3.98 runs/9 this year (not good at all, but well below his career average of 5.35, and above Cairo’s career of 3.76). Cairo is creating about 2.65/9 this year.
That’s an average of about 0.2 runs per game (assuming 4 AB). I have trouble imagining that Phelps lets in that many more per game than Cairo even though he does play first like he’s wearing a glove made out of cement.
And if Phelps reverts to career norms with more regular plays, his bat adds about 0.4 runs per game over Cairo, which is fairly significant.
I need better fielding numbers on Phelps before I can answer that question well.
to put it in simple terms, over the course of 162 games (which none of these guys would ever play), Phelps would create 32 more runs than Cairo. If Phelps approached his career numbers, he’d create about 60 more.
it’s hard to imagine that he’d also let in 32-60 more than Cairo.
Murph,
There is nothing Selig can do about it. All he can do is what he has been doing….delay their signings, then approve them. That’s what he did with Kennedy, Chamberlain and Melancon last year.
The Yankees argument is simple. We pay our luxury tax money on time, we will do whatever the hell we want with our money.
If Selig does anymore (such as not approve the contracts), he gets whacked with a collusion charge.
The Red Sox, Mets and Angels also signed guys over the slot last year and Selig delayed their signings before approving them.
My theory re: the Yankees draft is, they knew this was a thin draft this year. So, they took a number of “above the slot guys”, and will take their shot at signing them.
If they sign a few of them, its a great draft. If not, no harm, no foul. Especially with the Latin American signing period coming up soon.
There are two 17 year old Dominican OF’s that are supposed to be the “next big things”, if you believe the scouts.
Cashman has spent a lot of time in the DR in recent weeks and the scout rumors are the Yankees are in on both kids.
Who knows what happens but, they spent a lot of money of Latin American kids last year and I suspect they will be aggressive again this year.
Give me Suttle, Peavey, Romaine, Angelini and those two Dominican kids and Selig can do whatever he wants. He won’t be able to keep the Yankees from signing those players.
Good thing we have A-Rod to balance those clowns out. Nine A-Rods would, in theory, score 9.92 runs a game.
Anyone who thinks Phillips would not be a better hitter than Cairo right now is delusional. Phillips has an OPS of .895 in Scranton this year. And their defense is equivalent. So why not play Phillips over Cairo until we come up with a better option (since it’s obvious that Torre will not play Phelps at 1B on a regular basis)?
You can’t play out Phelps’ stats over 162 games. That’s a misuse of stats.
Defensively, its not close. Cairo (and Phillps, for that matter) is much better than Phelps. You just have to watch the games to see that. No stats are needed.
Phelps has shown no ability in his career to be a run producer on a long term basis. Especially the last couple of years in his career.
If he did, he wouldn’t be a Rule 5 guy.
If you are going to use stats to make an argument, don’t misuse them.
Taking a bench guy, and playing his stats out over a full season, doesn’t work because they never hit like that over a full year.
If they did, they wouldn’t be a bench player.
You just hope to catch lightening in a bottle for a few weeks with a bench guy, from an offensive standpoint.
Phelps can’t even give them that.
The guy is just taking up a roster spot at this point and they do have better internal options for a short period of time.
I am delusional. Andy Phillips might be an AAAA hitter. But I suspect that he’s just a pretty good AAA hitter. He’s 30. He’s not improving. And nothing in his numbers suggests that he’s any more than a 660 OPS guy. In fact, the more ABs he gets, the worse his plate judgment gets. He walks less than Soriano, and he accomplishes this by swinging at pitches that Vlad Guererro couldn’t reach.
Cairo is a bad, bad hitter, but I trust him more in any spot than I do Andy. Read through my comments, Kevin M., and see where you think I have it wrong.
“doubt we’d platoon 2 lefties at the same position.
minky will go back to first once healed. not sure if they’ll keep this phelps exiperiment going though.”
Saucy,
Cairo is a righty.
That’s totally fair, SJ44. Except you’re not giving me a realistic impression of how many runs Cairo saves over Phelps. I suspect that Phelps, to be fair is about halfway between where is he now, and what is career numbers are, as a regular player.
He’s been pretty brutal with the bat this year, and I can’t imagine that he’d get much worse with everyday play. 4.00 RC/9 isn’t tough to sustain unless you’re Miggy, in which case it’s just impossible.
Your point would be fair, SJ, if he were, in fact, raking right now.
But he’s producing numbers that are well below his norm, and that are well above Cairo’s.
That’s just my feeling.
The thing I love about Cairo is that he’s not one dimensional like Phelps or Phillips.
Cairo can steal, lay down a bunt, get infield hits, etc
It’s nice to have that.
Again, I’d like to see Cairo stick at 1B. Then when Alphabet soup comes back, platoon Cairo/Doug M together.
About the Trenton rotation, what happened to Jason Jones, wasn’t he pitching well too?
If Cairo could really get infield hits, wouldn’t he get on base more than 27.8% of the time?
And he is a good bunter. Which, in his case, means that he’s a bad hitter.
What exactly is your point? He’s a #9 hitter who was a backup.
Who exactly do you want at 1B? Let me clue you in, Teixera isn’t coming any time soon.
Cairo provides some speed and solid defense at 1B.
We do not need an offensive bat at every spot.
I know during this win streak, I counted 9 plays (an average of one per game) that Cairo made at first I know Phelps would have never made.
Even yesterday, Phelps made 3 plays in the field that made me cringe:
1. The non-scoop on Cairo’s throw. Any average first baseman makes that play. It wasn’t a tough play.
2. The slow roller that Pettitte called for, meaning Phelps has to go to the bag, and he went for the ball. I thought Andy was going to kill him. lol
3. A play nobody talks about. He fields a slow roller, Pettitte is ON THE BAG, and it took Phelps forever to throw him the ball. They made the out but, Pettitte almost got cleated on the play.
I look at a guy’s AB’s to judge whether or not he can produce. Phelps just has AWFUL AB’s with RISP in times the games are still in doubt. Even yesterday, in those situations, he K’ed twice and looked awful on both occasions.
He drove in a run with a single (that should have been an error on the CF, IMO) later in the game when they had already put the game away.
I am saying Andy Phillips is some worldbeater. He isn’t. He is what he is.
All I am looking for is a decent month from him. They get that, its enough.
I just don’t see how they get that from Phelps. I really don’t. You hold your breath everytime a ball is hit or thrown to him and he just doesn’t hit.
Its tough to watch at times. I just think Phillips gives them a better shot at getting something out of the position from one player right now.
It looks like Jason Jones is going to the bullpen in Trenton. No official word on that yet but, he looks like the odd man out in that rotation since the Yankees told the Thunder they want Kennedy and Chamberlain pitching on their regular days.
I like Teixeira, obviously. But I don’t think I was advocating spending what it would cost to bring him here.
I think counting plays anecdotally is counterfactual and the same sort of misuse of data you accused me of. Look at his range factor, etc., and not at plays you, with your bias, feel sure that a man who’s not on the field wouldn’t have made.
JOSH PHELPS is a terrible fielder. He’s a much better hitter than Cairo. That doesn’t mean that Josh Phelps is a good hitter. It means that he’s probably in the 40th percentile while Cairo is probably in the 5-10th.
ANDY PHILLIPS is as bad a hitter as Cairo, and he’s not some sort of worldbeater with the glove.
I don’t understand.
Phelps “just doesn’t hit,” but he hits demonstrably better than Cairo. He probably looks worse at times, because he’s stupid and because he swings really hard for no reason. But ridiculous Ks aside, he’s a much, much better bat than Miguel.
I can’t believe I’m defending Josh Phelps.
The sad part is that I’m trashing a player whom I like personally. I would love to be friends with Miguel Cairo. He’s really funny, and I was happier when he got a key double during the Texas comeback than I was when Jorge actually won it.
I used to like Andy Phillips more, but he’s kind of creepy. The sort of guy who rings your bell at 7:15 AM on Saturday to push Bible tracts.
Whats with the Phillips hate? Jeez.
COmparing him to Phelps is not like comparing him to Donnie Baseball here.
I don’t think you’d lose much offensively with Andy.
Rufus:
If you want a 625 OPS, by all means recall A Phillips
Still havent got an answer.
Half, who exactly do you want at 1B now?
You know halfz a lot of guys struggle in their first season of pro ball. That doesn’t mean they’re 600 OPS guys.
And again its not like Phelps is 1000 OPS. And his glove probably gives back 200 pts of that.
The Yankees 1b is playing for another team right now.
halfz, Please be gentle with all the stats you’re throwing around. We’re comparing a decent utility guy with an insurance policy. The fact of the matter is neither should be playing much. If you look at the rest of the lineup, they’re pretty strong offensively. We need a 1b that is as strong defensively as possibly. Especially with a guy like Wang on our staff, and a guy as laxidasical as Cano on second. As my stats teacher used to say, you can make a statistic tell you anything you want. Don’t watch the game with a calculator out. Try watching it with a beer. You’ll find you enjoy it more.
Halfz….you do realize you are using an extremely small sample size for Phillip career OPS in the major leagues, right? And that his minor league OPS both for this year and his career translate to a much higher OPS than Cairo’s right?
*BREAKING NEWS*
ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap reporting live from Fenway says Boston fans are in full panic, convinced they are in the midst of another historic meltdown.
YES!!!
Boston fans should not panic. They will hang on for the wild card.
Ok so I think we all can agree, Phelps should be nothing more than a pinch hitter at this point. More likely he should be the everyday DH at Scranton.
Cairo is good, not great, good to have a guy who can sit on the bench for two weeks who can come in and play great defense and get some hits.
Phillips deserves a shot, in fact because he could play good defense and backup 3B, he could be an asset to the team.
So if we try and send Phelps down, I believe Baltimore can take him back. Can any other team put in a waiver claim? Would Baltimore really want him back? Will it cost us money to do that? Can we trade him somewhere instead?
When did Andy Phillips become such a great hitter? I know he’s doing great in AAA, but he was horrible last year in the majors.
We are not holding onto Phelps because of money issues. In a world where the Yankees pay close to a million per Clemens start, the $25K they would lose for giving Phelps back is the equivalent of a couple of his pitches. They’re holding onto him because there’s nothing else there. That doesn’t say much for Phillips b/c he’s proved he can hit at Scranton.
Let Cashmoney take care of it. He knows what he’s doing.
the only problem i have with phillips is not that even his mother cant pick him out of a lineup but that he just isnt a great hitter.
My prediction for Roger tonight:
6 innings, 2 runs, 5 hits, 5ks
Phelps in Damon out
Cashman needs to put Damon on the DL tonight and get it over with.
Arguing about Cairo vs Phelps vs Phillips at first is like arguing who looks best in a string bikini: Rosie O’Donnell, Roseanne Barr or Janet Reno. Where have you gone, Danny Cater?
Damon should go on the DL because he should not be starting in CF next week for the interleague road games.
Damon has a tummy ache??
How’d he do that ??
Another opportunity for Phelps tonight. Regardless of his past numbers, at some point, he is going to have to hit.
If he doesn’t, there is no sense having him on the roster.
Especially when its clear they are going to have to find a bat somewhere because of the uncertain health of Giambi and Damon.
I think we’ll be seeing Phillips or Thompson before they head out west. They want another position player. Guess Henn would be sent down, or I guess Clippard is a possibility if he lays an egg tomorrow.
So the bench tonight is Wil Nieves? Is that possible?
Nieves along with Basik
oh right Basak. Beat that bench Mets!
Clemens did that on purpose just to tease them. Thats all your gonna get.
Yanks need to get some runs early so the Mets don’t wake up here today
Bobby looked like a fool up there. Alex needs to pick him up. We gotta hit Oliver.
oliver perez is kinda nasty should make for a good game see how good we are playing to see if we could get this win
That Ali story is classic, Pete.
I dont like Lieter doing Yankees commentary . He has never been Yankees fan . Always a Mets or red sox fan . I remember in 2004 ALCS , as a commentator with FOX , he was always rooting against Yankees .
UGH why does Josh have to come up and big situations?
I love Leiter. He’s my favorite of all the rotating color men. His insight into the intricacies of the game is wonderful.
Kay and O’Neill are my favorites, the rest are a little bland
Looks like Perez is up to the challenge. He is definitely neutralizing our left dominated lineup
I love O’niell and Joe G.
this is going to be a long game, is it me or does the air around the yankees seem not right
They just have to stop swinging at pitches a foot out of the strikezone.
They have helped Perez out the first two innings because of a lack of plate discipline.
Lay off those pitches, and take the walks, its a whole different outcome.
Phelps? What can you say. He may be the worst player on a roster in the game. Why he is still on this one is hard to figure out.
He can’t hit and he can’t field. Yet, he is on a major league roster and, due to injuries, in the lineup 2-4 times a week.
He’s a disaster and they have to put him, the team, and the fans, out of their misery and DFA him ASAP.
It looks like it’s going to be “that kind of game” tonight.
SJ44 & murphydog –
I had been wondering the same thing regarding how long before Selig socks it to the Yankees’ draft strategy. I suppose since it’s NOT just the Yankees, he can’t really do anything, except make life a little miserable, at least not yet.
damit Jorge
2 bad throws. On a pitch out!!
Jorge has got to throw the ball better than this. If not, the Mets will steal 20 bases off him this weekend.
Two poor throws and its costing them tonight.
Posada’s footwork looks terrible…Fatigue maybe…..
Wow speed kills this team
Now you see why Clemens is so great, even at 45. Most pitchers give up more than one run in that inning. Roger finds a way to get outs and minimize the damage.
That’s the kind of stuff he can teach to young pitchers.
Some guys just know how to pitch.
Clemens is blessed with great ability AND the knowledge of how to pitch.
Contrast that with Randy Johnson. Johnson had great ability, he had no idea how to pitch.
How many times have we seen Johnson, in a similar situtaion to this, just fall apart and give up a big inning when he played for the Yankees?
Its the great thing about Clemens. Even on nights he’s not “on”, he finds ways to keep the team in the game.
It’s 1-0 but it feels like 5-0.
Can we please hit Oliver Perez a little so we don’t have to see his stupid little jig.
Abreu on base - shocker!!! How about an A-bomb?
I hate that stupid hop over the line. Damit Alex just missed one.
Just missed it.
Oh boy its one of those nights.
I hope Yankees crush Glavine tomorrow . I really dislike Glavine . The MOST undeserving pitcher to get to 300 WINS.
Yeah 3.40 Career ERA with 2 Cy Youngs. He really sucks.
How in the hell does a pitcher win over 300 games undeservingly? Try winning just 1 game in the big leagues. It’s not easy, you idiot. Keep your mouth shut, you don’t know a damn thing about baseball.
Michael Kay is an idiot. He thinks he is funny but really isn’t. When he does the games, its almost like he thinks he is a comedian, kinda like Joe Buck. The game almost takes a back seat to his jokes and stories. It is alot easier to listen to games when Ken Singleton does play-by-play with Flaherty or Girardi. And also the only time stories are easy to listen to is when Paul O’Neill is in the booth
Perez is losing it. Please don’t bail him out by hitting a DP ball…
Just as things are getting troubling for Perez, Josh Phelps is up to bail him out!!!!!
Take until he throws one in there
I am sorry but the Yankees really need to do better than Josh Phelps. Two horrible at bats tonight….
this stinks
i think phelps has become an automatic out
No luck tonight.
A-Rod just missed it.
Now Cairo just missed it.
Ugh
Back to the same mistakes this team was making when they were losing.
Was Matsui going to buy a hot dog? What was he doing?
Another missed chance. He stole a homerun from Miggy
A lot of downers here.
Cripes, when the yankees are down 1-0 you all think the world is ending.
It’s still early.
this team is terrible!
Phelps destroys another inning. Perez can’t throw the ball over the plate and Phelps swings at a pitch a foot out of the strikezone.
He would have walked if he lays off that pitch and Cairo’s ball is a SF instead of a DP.
The guy is just awful and the statheads fighting to defend him really need to watch the games.
He just can’t hit. If they are ahead by 5 runs, he hits. Anything under that, he doesn’t.
Honestly, if Damon can’t play this weekend, DH Jorge and play Nieves behind the plate. Better arm, gives Jorge a rest and they have a DH who can actually hit in the lineup.
Enough of Josh Phelps. He’s a one man innings killer.
I think someone needs to get buzzed with all this showboating. Matsui screwed up, was too far off the base
nope, Josh Phelps stinks. The guy is brutal. Im sick of hearing all these people say hes good. If he is so good, why cant he just get a hit? Perez throws 9 in a row out of the zone and he swings at a pitch outside. Then he pops up to right field when he should have walked to load the bases. Im sorry to offend the Josh Phelps guru but he HAS to go. I would rather see anyone but him
josh phelps is a big useless oaf
that play was painful
I hope the “this team is terrible” comment was sarcasm.
It must be Perez’s birthday, because we keep giving him gifts.
This is the sort of game where we just have to break out sooner or later.
Pete,
This team might be terrible. They are hovering around .500, which is nothing to be proud of. And they do look horrible tonight.
I am tired of seeing that Reyes dance….
“I hope the “this team is terribleâ€? comment was sarcasm.”
it was
We better not be waking a sleeping giant. We’ve missed so many chance to score and blow the game open. Not good at all.
Interesting about the bunts. The reason Cy Young was forced into retirement at age 44 was because he got too fat too field them.
Should be taking Perez to the cleaners by now……He doesn’t survive the next inning…..R
Hope you’re right pat.
This series came at a bad time. Just about any other team that isn’t a blood enemy would not have been able to stop the Yank’s momentum.
By the same token, the Mets are using the juice in the series to snap out of their recent coma. Once we hit Colorado we’ll be fine, I just hope we squeeze 2 out of 3 from this.
On another note, zito is getting smacked around by the soxs, and this is without Ortiz.
THey are making Jorge look really bad….I know its Clemens high leg kick but still.
We have to win tonight with Roger on the mound. We can’t count on Clippard.
Back to the top of the lineup. lets make those punks stop their stupid dances and retake the lead!
It’s kind of ridiculous that Clemens is pitching so well, Perez is pitching so poorly, and it’s 2-0 Mets. This anomaly must be corrected.
Clemens isn’t pitching that bad. He’s keeping the team in the game. Reyes is a helluva player. No shame in him having a great night.
Jorge isn’t throwing the ball well and they are running at will. That’s a problem.
Unfortunately, the lineup is short (offensively) tonight because of Damon’s absence and we are stuck with Phelps killing innings.
The lack of patience the last inning (and throughout this game so far) killed a big inning.
They aren’t going to win every game. But, they are battling and its still only 2-0. As long as they keep battling as they are, they will be fine in the long term.
Another reason why I am glad they didn’t sign Zito. He never pitches well against the Red Sox.
Imagine paying somebody 128 million bucks and he can’t pitch against your biggest rival?
Best money that was never spent by the Yankees.
Melky pulling a Phelps and swings at three pitches no where near the strike zone and gets himself.
Perez wants to walk people but, for whatever reason, they aren’t patient enough to take them.
More patience, and he has 5 more walks tonight and they have a couple of runs.
Just one of those nights.
Melky looks so out of league . He needs to lose that baby fat and stop hacking on pitches at his head .
8.5
Andrew, baseball games are 9 innings, not 5
Everyone needs to settle down, it’s the 5th inning. All of a sudden everyone hates Melky and is quick to jumpship.
Melky is definitely no lead off hitter
That may be so, but who do you want to put in there if Damon is out?
SJ44, what kind of car was Phelps driving when he ran over your dog?
I’d rather see a hobbled Johnny D, and a healthy Josh Phelps. I wish we could send him back to the o’s already.
Roger is pitching well enough to win this game. He deserves it.
*8 Ks* for Rajah
not bad for someone who was in moth balls 6 weeks ago.
Don’t tell me you are going to roll out some stats to tell me how good a hitter Phelps is?
I just call’em as I see’em. The guy has no business being on this roster.
He can’t hit and, despite numerous e-mails to Pete explaining how “great” he is defensively, we have seen otherwise.
Its quite simple, actually. You want to have a 25 man roster in which everyone can make some kind of contribtion toward the team winning. Phelps makes none.
So, its not out of line to ask, why is he here, is it?
Confession - I was a big Phelps supporter - if for no other reason to be a late inning pinch hitter, but I can be
(wo)man enough to admit when I am wrong. We gave him his chance - in fact, multiple chances. I think it is time to give someone else a chance.
He is, funny Roger seemed to get in trouble in the first, but has give up 2 runs. One started by a cheap bunt single, the other a homerun.
Oliver, can’t find the plate has been in trouble in many innings. Almost gives up a homerun to Alex. Than has his left fielder steal a 3 run homerun from miggy.
mel- 2 runs thru 6 should be more than enough. They need to get to Perez and get him out of this game soon. We need to get to their pen
Jen- I dont think that was going out. It was close though but I think it was gonna hit the top of the wall
Is it just me or is Perez getting alot of low strike calls.
What Perez’s pitch count at?
I’ll take this outing from Clemens everytime out this year.
He has pitched good enough to win against an AL calibur lineup.
He’s not even really “on” yet. When he is, he will be better.
As it is now, its better than his last start. All you can ask for from him, IMO.
When I see this team swing at pitches like this, I always scratch my head. It seems obvious that Perez dossn’t want to throw strikes. Doesn’t anyone on that bench get the players together and tell them that they need to be more patient? It just seems so obvious to a fan watching the game. I know you don’t want to “take away a batter’s agressiveness”, but at some point, that can work against you. It’s certainly happening tonight.
Ah, too me it looked like he caught it over the wall. I think it was gone.
Memo to the sopcast webmaster: the mets broadcast is better than the yanks cast.
Hopefully we can get get Perez out after 6
Until Cashman comes up with another option at 1B, were stuck with him…..
NYR nice job with the Clemens prediction. Pretty darn close.
Perez is at 92.
Cairo’s ball was over the wall. I’m surprised a fan didn’t catch it.
anyone warming up in the pen??
Yeah a player I refer to as gasoline aka vizciano.
SJ44, the only stat worth rolling out about Phelps is the number of times you’ve mentioned him. I just think it’s funny you’re so hung up on the guy. What can you say about him, he’s only on the team because our only other options were Mientkiewicz and Phillips, and he’s only in the lineup today because Damon was a late scratch.
I mean, you said he may be the worst player on any active roster. That’s just goofy. There are equally bad or worse players who make a lot more money.
Thanks Dan
Cairo’s ball would not have cleared the wall. The glove was in front of the wall, not over.
Wow, Clemens starting this inning with 104 pitches.
He had to slide into first. he could have injured 2 other players.
Jeremy- Thats not the point though. The point is that Phelps is pretty close to useless. He cantplay defense for his life. I can play first base as well as Josh Phelps. He can not play the field nor can he hit at all. He gets all his hits when there are 2 outs and none on. When put into a clutch, runners on situation, for the most part, he will strikeout or hit into a double play. He shows why he is a 30 year old, career minor leaguer
Too bad Clemen’s start is being wated on such a snake-bitten night. The Yankees have hit Perez hard at times with nothing to show, and then have let the bottom of the line-up destroy at least 3 innings. These are the sort of games the Yankees can’t afford to blow anymore, so lets hope something gets done in the last three for the Yanks.
This game is still winnable, why is Luis in there?
Nice work Rocket, you earned your keep again. I don’t know what it is about Perez, he should not have kept us scoreless. Even Cano drew a walk off him!
Hey where is the blogger who complains about brittion. They been doing it every game we’ve won. we need that good luck.
start saying prayers that we get thru this inning witth this guy in the game
having oliver perez as a “throw in” in the nady trade last year is the reason why i dont feel bad for small market teams. its just bad baseball move to give up on a young arm, especially a lefty. i bet the pirates are kicking themselves in the ass now.
Vizcaino is worthless and the best part is, Torre uses him. The pen is as rested as possible and Bruney hasnt pitched in days and he puts Vizcaino in. Who would you rather see, Bruney or Vizcaino?
Finally a cost stealing for Jorge!!
Nice throw Posada!!!
And gasoline immediatley puts another speedy runner on base.
Vizcaino way to get your job done.
eventually percentages caught up and Jorge had to make some good throws
Caught.
BOOO, he was OUT!!!
Clemens could have put Reyes on first too.
hes out!!!
This is why the horrible start killed NY. Figure a loss tonight followed by another tomorrow with the awful clippard pitching and the yanks are back to about 10 out of the division and a bunch behind in the WC.
And Perez is not that good (just watched the Tigers light him up), but the Yanks didn’t need a good RH bat like Sheff’s, so they’re getting what they deserve.
How does NY come out flat against the Mets? Only a Joe Torre team…
GO NYR, when do the percentages even out for bad calls. Reyes was out!! another poor call by the second base ump.
I just looked up “Vizcaino” in an online Spanish to English dictionary, and it translates as “I will let you win”.
Go NYR, I agree, he’s pretty bad overall. But again, what can you say? He’s not a multi-million dollar acquisition, he’s some guy most of us had never heard of before who we picked up out of desperation.
I’m also hesitant to bash him as being unclutch after only what, 80 at bats? Besides, I remember him hitting a vital home run in our 9th inning, 2-out comeback against Cleveland on April 19.
Phelps is not good. I’m a big fan of doing going hard after Teixeira because the first base situation is so bad. Then we can cut Phelps. Until then, we’re stuck with him.
Vizcaino?
Clueless Joe strikes again. Actual in-game managing is just so hard for him.
Viscaino scares me…
so does the Mets speed. good god.
When they stop going to optimology offices waiting rooms to look for umpires
No damage done, but seriously, not really the situation I’d want Vizzy pitching in.
Well at least it was closer than the Bloomquist play. But it’s just that kind of night for us overall.
Jeremy- Youre telling me the Yankees dont have a younger prospect that can do what Phelps does?
“I remember him hitting a vital home run in our 9th inning, 2-out comeback against Cleveland on April 19.”
the game was seemingly out of reach at that point, so there was absolutely no pressure in that AB. phelps has done more than enough to show he can’t handle MLB pitching. he did deserve the shot…he got his shot…and he choked like a dog, so get rid of him.
Can the Yanks actually look like they’re interested in winning this ballgame?
C’mon, choke on that bat handle, Clueless Joe!
Go NYR, if we did, I’m sure we would have heard about this person by now. Or he would be playing first base for the Yankees.
It’s not like Phelps is blocking a prospect because he’s a Torre favorite. Torre prefers to start Cairo at first instead. I can’t imagine Cashman has a special loyalty to Phelps.
I think the likeliest reason for our acquisition of Phelps and our continued use of him is our lack of an alternative.
Phelps has such a nice power swing… if he could only make some contact every once in a while, jesus.
There is a reason why guys like Phelps are career minor league players. And we are clearly seeing them. He cant field or hit MLB pitching. In many ways its just like hockey. You have minor league guys that score 35 goals in the minors but just dont have that thing that allows them to make it in the NHL. Same thing with baseball. Guys like Phillips and Phelps have ability but dont have that ability to make it in the big leagues. Phelps is one of those players
Phelps doesnt deserve to wear Winfield’s #….
Oliver Perez does not throw first pitch strikes. He doesn’t even throw any strikes for that matter, but the hitter’s continue to get themselves out.
Phelps doesnt deserve to wear a Yankee uniform
Phelps doesnt deserve to wear a Yankee uniform
Cano vexes me. Didn’t this guy come close to a batting title last year? Why the regression? His batting average dropped almost .075!!!
Is Damon available to pinch hit? If so, he should be up there to start the 8th
Cashman may have to make a reasonable offer for Dunn….Then again he’s carries a leadglove with him…But he carries a 40-45 homerun stick also…..
well, so much for the “hot streak”
after tomorrow’s loss, it will be back to the funeral-like atmosphere.
ugh…just ugh.
Yeah I believe I heard he is available. I don’t know why he wouldn’t be able to hit 3 more times. and just dh like he was supposed to.
didn’t someone predict Cano would not hit .300 this season and he was ridiculed?
looks like the prediction was spot-on.
pat m- No way. For this team, solid defense is more important than a 40 homer guy who strikesout more times than anyone in baseball. We need a guy who can deliver some offense but not Dunn
Dunn? 200 Ks and no glove-payday coming. No thanks.
Bring up Shelly Duncan for Phelps.
Cano’s lack of plate discipline hurt there….
we need some baserunners soon………
canofcorn- You have to give him some time. He will be up around .310 at least by years end, write it down
Yeah, I don’t see Dunn at first. He has very limited experience there.
shelly duncan?
God, he’ll flop just like Phelps.
It’s embarassing for the Yankees to have such a pathetic bench.
can Shelley play first well? I think he has like 15 homers or something
I really don’t understand why Perez has a seven-inning shutout. This just may be the worst game of the year so far.
4 ks for Delgado! Ouch!
I think we should bring Andy Phillips again. He had a very hot month last year, he helped carry the team. I know he had some poor months, but You might be able to “blame” family problems, his wife was very ill. I’d like to give him another chance. Plus he is an easy guy to root for.
Guys -
The Reds and their GM Krivsky are not selling Dunn cheap
According to Suzyn Waldman, the Angels inquired about Dunn. The Reds asked for:
- a starting pitcher
- a 2nd baseman
- a top prospect
(I’d translate that into Erwin Santana, Chone Figgins and a prospect - or something like this…)
Reds can keep Dunn at anything approaching that price
Great outing from Clemens - it’s exactly the kind of progress you want to see. It’s like the end of spring training for Clemens at the moment
As far as Perez, you take your hat off. You also take heed to what Leiter said - Perez was wild in the zone, and lived dangerously
He was missing LoDuca’s targets in a big way - but was still effective
I think there was a lack of patience tonight. Hope the guys get that patient approach back
I’d want Duncan to DH and pinch hit. He’s an average 1B, Cairo should stay there.
It’s safe to say Shelly is an upgrade over Phelps though.
For some odd reason Cashman is afraid to offer Phelps back to Baltimore, maybe this game will finally push him to do it.
“canofcorn- You have to give him some time. He will be up around .310 at least by years end, write it down”
the league has just caught up with him. imo, he was always incredibly overrated. this is pretty much what he will be unless he becomes more patient, which I don’t see happening.
Wow. Did Mike Myers actually record an out against a batter? Isn’t that the first time this has happened this year? We should throw a party….
The problem with Cano is that the Yankees have placed themselves in such a hole that they can’t afford to wait for his average to go up. Every game is important, we need the hits now.
I would rather see Phillips than Phelps just because he plays great defense and is likeable. He will easily hit as much as Phelps plushe has a great glove.
Crap!!!!!…..

I’m going to be at the College World Series all weekend so someone needs to take my place and say something bad about Britton before the game to keep this streak alive. Might as well be a little superstitious about the winning streak. I’ll try to log on before I go to the game and fill my role.
canofcorn- Thaats the thing. Most younger players swing at everything. Its just he has to mature andlearn to be patient. He will make an adjustment
At the moment this game is all on the offense. Roger pitching a pretty decent game (better than oliver in my opionion)and it was only his 5th start of the year.
While the offense hasn’t gotten many hits, Oliver was begging them to take more walks. They’ve had plently of chances to score at least one run.
Have I ever mentioned that Britton is a minor league sloth and has no business being on a major league roster? Ever!
“The problem with Cano is that the Yankees have placed themselves in such a hole that they can’t afford to wait for his average to go up. Every game is important, we need the hits now.”
Amen.
I don’t think Pete and some posters really grasp just how well the Yanks would have to play to make the playoffs due to the awful start.
Losing 2 out of 3 to the Mets would be disasterous.
We already have a good 1B glove though in Cairo. It just seems like a waste in having Phelps or Phllips on this team.
Duncan has alot of power and can DH(Damon hurt?), pinch hit, play some field if needed, and the occasional 1B.
It’s fair to note though that Duncan is an average 1B.
Britton is a piece! I have said it all along. Everyone thinks he is our savior but he is unproven
Please ignore canocorn and the troll’s other handles
White Sox fan? To quote the Hawk, they gone…
Jen-
“Andy Phillips is an easy guy to root for”
you mean cuz he’s good lookin’
you vixen.
Derek will get on here
Why do they keep swinging on 2-0 counts!?!?
Boston and Detroit both winning easily tonight.
And the Yanks continue to act like they’d rather be somewhere else.
Okay leaving Perez in now is just tempting fate….please lets get some good at bats!!
Did anyone watch the Mets vs LA?
This is humiliating.
“Boston and Detroit both winning easily tonight.
And the Yanks continue to act like they’d rather be somewhere else.”
Where did they want to be the past 9 games?
All I’m saying is there’s a concernable issue when it comes to facing a lefthand starter…..Sooner or later it’s needs to be fixed…..Come October they need to have some balance…..
Thank God. If I’m Willie, I would’ve left in Perez for Abreu. He’s made him look very silly tonight.
Holy a hit!! And we get in the pen. Perez with that stupid jump! UGH, that just ticks me off, and it should tick the Yankees off too!
Hey Pat, you know who would have been a perfect fix for the right handed side for the Yankees? That Bernie Williams guy. Would have been perfect and cheap
Pat -
To quote Joe Torre, the Yankee lefty bats have historically solid left/right splits. The Yankees do NOT need Dunn in my opinion…
losing sheffield’s bat has killed the yanks vs decent LH pitching. Thanks Cashman!
And they got such a great return on that trade!
Chris Britton entered witness protection today.
no Shoenweiss?
Actually Whelan is doing well, the Sheffield trade is something called “long term”. Look it up, it’s a new concept for many of you.
Historically doesn’t count for crap. Giambi is probably gone for year, Damon doesn’t have any power left in the legs. The splits are there now.
Scooter- Playoff baseball is different. You arent facing average lefties, you are facing the best lefties
C’mon A-Rod!
Lets go Bobby!!!
An a-bomb coming up here?
Where would Sheffield have played? We had Jason for DH. And we have Bobby for rf.
Man, I thought that was going, going, gone.
The smart play here is to walk arod and pitch to Zilla
A A-choke for Arod!
To get shut out by the Mets? ugh.
C’mon Arod, we need you to hit those low and away strikes you were hitting at the beginning of the year.
THE STADIUM IS STANDING IN ANTICIPATION
here come the haters there so predictable
don’t forget, it’s an automatic loss tomorrow, too. so then you have tons of pressure on sunday night to avoid the sweep. the misery is returning.
a lot of good the standing did, you liberal idiot.
canofcom, pls shutup
8.5
any bets on how gutless the yanks will be in the 9th?
Another new concept alert. Baseball games go 9 innings. They are not over before 27 outs are achieved. So therefore the game is not over. Keep em close here and we will at least tie in the 9th. That’s my prediction.
Re: Canofcorn
It was so peaceful for the last 9 games. Isn’t it amazing? A soon as the Yanks come close to losing ONE game in their last 10, here come the trolls.
Have your fun canofcorn. Hopefully we’ll only see you once every week or 10 days or so.
Rudy ain’t that the truth, like roaches they all scurry when the lights come on (winning streak) and when the lights are off (lost game) they come out.
canofcorn is your life so pathetic that you have to come on to opposing teams site’s. wow your a loser to put it lightly
yes, the game is over, you dolt.
and you are a complete idiot if you think the yanks have any chance left. and i will call you out on it for making such a screwed up prediction.
I dont know.. i’d wager a bet that an actual can of corn knows more about baseball than the troll who calls himself one.
“and when the lights are off (lost game) they come out.”
at least you’re smart enough to realize the game is lost, unlike jackoff jeff.
Guys
Again, don’t feed the trolls. They are angry b/c the White Sox lost to the Pirates tonight.
The more they post, the easier it is to trace an IP address and block them from posting…
Pete’s right - you can’t aim the ball - you can just hit it hard. Lots of hard-hit balls right at people.
You just want to keep the patient approach despite Perez’s performance tonight. Win the series…
GoNYR - look at Matsui’s numbers against the best lefties - he’s more than solid. I’d have to check Matsui vs Santana. There will be much better and cheaper options than Dunn out there. If the White Sox keep losing, they might be selling off
canofcorn=oxygen thief
canofcorn,
You really must like the sound of your own typing.
