Wang: cracked fingernail
-

Chien-Ming Wang had the finger nail on his index finger crack in half horizontally in the third inning. So after six innings - and six pitches short of his pitch count - they took him out.
“I wouldn’t want to send him out there for five pitches,” Joe Torre said.
Wang said that this has happened before and he has been able to use a glue solution to patch it up. He said he would make his next start.
As for using Scott Proctor, Torre said he he was trying to put the right-hander in a good position. Boston had its 8 and 9 hitters up followed by two right-handed batters. Crisp, Cora and Lugo are not the Boston players who have hit Proctor hard in the past.
Colter Bean was available. But he had attended high school and college with Josh Hancock, who was killed earlier in the day. Today was probably not the day to run him out there.
Brian Cashman said that if anybody should be blamed, it’s him. “This is my responsibility,” he said. “I put this team together.”
The Yankees used five pitchers for the 10th straight game. That is the longest such streak in at least 50 years according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Cashman is right - it is his fault. If it wasn’t for him, Clueless Joe would have been fired before this season, when he should have.
So was it the nail or the pitch count that decided this for Torre? Sounds like the nail didn’t have anything to do with it. And is it really necessary for the pitch count to be so low for him? It’s not like he was on the DL for 3 months before this, but maybe it’s a reasonable number given his history of injuries?
I think you answered all your critics questions Pete. Maybe the crazies will get off your back.
O.K. Cashman, since it’s your responsibility, join the Yankees in Texas, but not to watch them play, oh no: you and Pettitte go to Clemens’s house there to ask him to pitch for the Yankees from June X on and offer him $16M -what Clemens’ pal Pettitte is making this year- to do so. Perhaps Andy could defer some of his salary for this year so it’s $16M - Pettitte’s deferred money. After this year, you, Cashman, negate that $16M spent on Clemens by trading Igawa and his remaining $16M through 2011 before he is untradeable. The 2008 Yankees rotation is already Wang, Mussina, most likely Pettitte again (I can’t see him passing on another $16M he alone can decide to make cuz it’s a player option), and Hughes. Does anyone really see Igawa a Yankee in 2008? I don’t. Put aside his 6 shutout innings vs. Boston yesterday. He looks like a #4 starter at best which isn’t bad but the Yanks need as many #3 or better types as possible -that’s what won them the 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 World Series and got them to the 2001 and 2003 World Series. The Yanks would’ve wasted $26M just for the right to talk to Igawa you say? Well if they had kept Randy Johnson this entire year, that’s $16M/ only $16M less spent. R.J. sure doesn’t look so bad right now. He’s better than Igawa for $30M and 4 years less!!! So trading Igawa is a $10M loss. Is it if the Yanks could get something decent with him in a trade worth $10M
but making far less? A reliever most likely. I wouldn’t mind Igawa for a lefty reliever after 2007, would you?
Steve: The doctors and trainers set pitch counts, not managers. The guy had a hamstring tear and those usually take a while to heal. He pitches with his leg wrapped. They also have a formula they use to build up a guy’s arm. Wang, don’t forget, has missed parts of two seasons with shoulder issues. You don’t just run him out there for 110 pitches in his second start.
The nail was bleeding pretty badly. Try and throw a baseball with your fingernail hanging off. It’s probably not so easy.
Nick: No chance. The crazies are crazy because they’re convinced of two things: They could manage the team better than Torre and they could cover the team better than I could. But I get the same way when I watch the Patriots. Fans are fans. I just wish people could be more respectful and have fun with it. But such is the world in which we live. Lots of unhappy folks who take it out on others.
Hey someone mentioned that Minky got elbowed in the back at first today did you happen to hear anything about that?
cashman has some work to do. go make a team because this team sucks. i am so ashamed how am i supposed to face my schoolmates tomorrow!
Peter: I am a SOX fan and could not agree with you more..Hence the phrase “past time”…
I like Joe Torre and Cashman. They have won 9 division titles in a row. In Atlanta that would be a dynasty. Those standards are what make this rivalry and these two cities great. I wish more people took a step back and realized how good it is to be a Yank or Sox fan…
Good Karma to all.

Peter -
I can’t imagine anyone doing any better covering the team - I just logged on to see the post-mortem, and you’ve already answered my questions.
In order to make the best decisions, you need all the necessary information. Torre and his staff are the ones with the information. This is why I like listening to their comments, to try and understand why those particular decisions were made. Most of the time, they have valid points.
Pete,
“Lots of unhappy folks who take it out on others.”
Boy, did you hit the nail on the head with that one. Most of the “unhappy crazies” are spineless weasles who don’t have the guts to address their nasty comments to anyone’s face; instead, just post on anon blogs or shout out in crowds while rip-roaring drunk.
Your blog continues to rock. And thankfully, there are fewer idiots posting here than on some of the other Yankee blogs out there. You even have some witty posters, including yourself.
I really enjoyed the comment yesterday about Manny being worse than just sending a German shepherd out to left field to fetch the ball.
OMG….can’t you Yankees fans just enjoy THE GAME of baseball. Some of you act like your lives hinge on the Yankees winning. Instead of bitching and moaning about the Yankees, why don’t you put yourself in the shoes of the Cardinals who lost a player today.
This is just a game. At the end of the season, the Yankees will have won 90-95 games. Cashman will do what is needed to fix the team.

Doug was asked what happened after you slid into first. He said he asked Julian if he was okay, yeah, everything was okay with him. Than someone (my guess youklis) said “we don’t play like that”. So Doug said that, that same guy elbowed me when he ran past me at first.
Kind of funny for a redsox player to say they don’t play “dirty”. what a joke.
“But such is the world in which we live. Lots of unhappy folks who take it out on others.”
Pete: this is so very, very true.
C’mon everyone, let’s have some dignity…you’d think we’re a bunch of red sox fans or something…
You, Peter, deleted my entry cuz I called you out for being no different than the so-called “crazies” with your 5 blog entries a day. Oh b.t.w. who helps stir the “Fire Torre” pot by mentioning it? You, hypocrite. You feed the so-called craziness, you’re no different. You’re actually worse. No one posts about it if no one gives them the opportunity to.
Go ahead and delete me again, truth hurts I guess. I could blog write you under the table and not even get Cashman’s ear to do it.
You’re so intelligent Stef? What have you contributed to this blog? Spare me your high and mighty “idiots posting on other Yankee blogs” garbage. Say that to their faces, everyone’s anonymous. At least I pointed out 5 legit reasons why Torre should be fired (2001-2006 and 2007 so far), too bad pro-Torre Can Do No Wrong you or Peter can’t deal with it…Peter certainly can’t deal withbeing called out for not practicing what he preaches (sanity) with his blog talking about Torre getting fired. If you don’t think he should be fired, why bring it up in a blog?
Re: Wanna Force The Issue Cashman?
There are other blogs you can go rant on…this is a Yankee blog, not a “roast Peter Abraham” blog. He’s doing his JOB.
If you don’t like what is going on here…don’t come here.
If you can do a better job than Torre, then send your resume to Cashman.
“I could blog write you under the table and not even get Cashman’s ear to do it.”
Then do it. Go on, put your keyboard where your mouth is. YOu think you could put together a better blog then go and do it, but spare us your rants and rudeness here. You’re a guest on someone elses blog, this is not your blog. You want to call the shots, get your own.
Posters like you are the reason this place has become unbearable to comment on. Its like trying to make your voice heard over a pack of howling coyotes or a lynch mob. This blog is not yours, nor is it your soapbox alone - so if you have so much to say, and you object to someone else not letting people like you take over their blog go and ruin it for other people - go and get your own soapbox.
Wanna: I didn’t delete anything. There are filters for curse words. Try posting again not using curses to make your points.
Oh, and take some valium.
On Cashman:
He’s a stand-up guy for saying this. I also happen to agree with him.
On Peter:
Wow. Peter, you’ve offered a service and a forum to fans here, and I applaud you for doing so. What many visitors here fail to realize is that, by providing this forum, you are going above and beyond the requisites and obligations of your job. It’s sad to see much of the civility drained from this blog by a small collection of people who are determined to ruin it for the rest.
I’ve always heard cracked nails were due to a calcium deficiency. The guy should be on a minimum of 5000mg of calcium a day & I bet he’s not. Bill Madden said Okajima (of the Red Sox middle/late relief) wanted to be a Yankee but Cashman wouldn’t talk to him.
“I could blog write you under the table and not even get Cashman’s ear to do it.
Curt, is that you?
i’m surprised how many pro ball players have played ball in high school with one another.
is it a coincidence or are their actually high schools that go out and try to recruit baseball talent?
Cool…
Cool.
Cool!
Sorry
