A-Rod: Best month since Roger Maris

April
21

A few (hopefully) interesting notes for you:

Alex Rodriguez has 12 homers and 30 RBI this month. The last Yankee to have a better month was Roger Maris, who had 13 homers and 32 RBI in July of 1961. Alex has more home runs than nine teams.

Derek Jeter has now hit safely in 51 of his last 53 games going back to Aug. 20.

Mariano Rivera has blown 11 saves against Boston in his career, more than any other opponent.

  1. 2007 Yankees

I’m certainly enjoying Arod’s beginning but as the old saying goes:
“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

    Here’s hoping for a 61 homer season!

  2. Russell W

Pete - not just because of that last at-bat but I would like to see Kevin Thompson as our backup outfielder over Melky Cabrera… what do you think about that?

  3. Dave

No Damon, No posada, No matsui and Im starting to doubt our offensive edge. This is the time when it becomes completely obvious that our bench is extremely weak.

  4. Chris NJ

The interesting thing is that, we are only halfway through this month, and he’s already up there with the best months in mlb ever.

Why does it always have to have to be a slug fest when these two teams face?

  5. Stuart

dave.. clown, all 3 of those guys are all stars, slight point.

Newsflash most teams do not have all star backups…

are you kidding or are you that foolish..

  6. Chris NJ

Russell, I think you are giving up on Melky too fast.

Sure, Thompson has been nearly great in his time in the majors, but Melky shows alot more promise, and tools over Thompson. He is just having a rough start to the season. It’s only been two weeks that Melky’s been in the season, and less for Thompson.

  7. sammy

    eh… Jeet.
    goll darn it.

  8. Stuart

It will be a slugfest because the Yanks are pitching basically a rookie with 7 games under his belt and Boston is a good team..

expect more of the same Sunday…

If the yanks can luck out 1 of these 2 it would be great…

they should have won last night but sh-t happens.

  9. Erick

Here’s hoping for a triple crown!

  10. Dave

stuart was that english - I dont get your point. I just said without those three we have lost our offensive edge. What did u think I meant? Most teams dont have an all star catcher but teams with a quarter of our payroll have backups who hit better than Nieves did in Triple A.

We better pray nieves doesnt get injured,. Phelps hasnt caught since 2001.

  11. Kentucky Yankee

Didn’t Thompson hit around .300 with a couple of doubles in his cup of coffee last year with the team? Seems like he’s doing alright today to.

  12. Erick

I guess the Yankees automatic outs decided to get inspired in the first innings, wish they would do that more often.

  13. Russell W

Maybe Chris… but I like Thompsons speed and baserunning abilities much better than Cabrera. I guess it upsets me a little that you wont see a headfirst dive from either of our corner outfielders… I could have caught a few hit balls in yesterdays game while I sat and watched some sliding attempts like they were sliding into 2nd base for an easy steal.

  14. Russell W

I said before the Yankees are gonna need at least 10 to have a chance at winning this… make that 15.

  15. A-Rod for Prez

    This game is a disaster.

  16. Erick

    I smell SLUGFEST

  17. Chris NJ

And the games tied. It is this kids first start this season, but if he can’t keep the other team to under 4 runs in the first 2 innings, then he shouldn’t be in the majors. He should be in the minors shaking some of that rust off.

Who was our other option anyway, out of Karstens?

I like the kid, but it’s kind of obvious that he’s not ready yet, and needs another start or two in the minors.

  18. Kentucky Yankee

I’m not sure we had any other options than Karstens unless we brought up another AA or AAA pitcher.

  19. JimCobain

Chris NJ - It was Steven Jackson who is starting in AAA for only the thrid time in his career, or whoever they had going in AA.

  20. Kat

    Manny is a fool.

  21. Erick

    A man possesed.

Let’s start the chant right now…

    TRI-PLE CROWN

    TRI-PLE CROWN

    TRI-PLE CROWN

  22. Jeff

Hey Pete, you know what bothers me? Your (and others’) suggestion that just because Rivera has more BS against Boston, that Boston somehow has his number, or is in his head. News Flash: Boston is and has been a very good team. One would expect good teams to do well, even against the best closer of all time. It’s not as if Rivera has *struggled* against Boston, it’s just that he hasn’t been as dominant.

  23. kidjock

Calm down. It’s 2 bunt singles. The Yankees will get hits, they just need the bullpen to hold the fort. Beckett doesn’t seem to have good control today. (this ump is ridiculous)

  24. A-Rod for Prez

Oh my god stop talking about A-Rod leaving, FOX :-(

  25. Kevin

“And the games tied. It is this kids first start this season, but if he can’t keep the other team to under 4 runs in the first 2 innings, then he shouldn’t be in the majors. He should be in the minors shaking some of that rust off.”

Beckett has given up 4 runs as well, and now a double to Arod.

  26. Jeff

Why won’t Giambi take the ball to left field? He won’t even swing at the ball if it isn’t right down the middle.

  27. A-Rod for Prez

Bottom of the Yankee order did well once again.

  28. Jeff

OH MY GOD Is anyone stupid enough to think Cashman will just let Alex walk (to the Red Sox of all teams) if he continues to hit well this season? It’s just nonsense. Cash said he wouldn’t discuss an extension during the season…plus things are bound to change. Anyway, who says Alex wants to leave? All he’s said is that he wants to finish in NY.

  29. Erick

    Jeff,

More important, why won’t Doug get a blooper or something anything?

I did like his homer the other day, but I’d rather see four singles in four games than a homer once every two weeks out of him.

  30. UKYankee

walking youkilis when papi is coming …..come on….who is this kid. I’m sure he’s a little rusty….not sure he’s any good anyway…but that is just terrible baseball

  31. A-Rod for Prez

We’re the 3rd place team this year.

  32. UKYankee

we’ll be fine…we’re not going to be without 40% OF OUR OFFENSE and 60% of our rotation all year long. The thing I hate about sox-yanks series is that we always seem to kickstart whichever of their guys that are in a slump! Coco, Lugo, Youk…Varitek…just watch Manny go off on a tear!!
