Mussina: Injury not serious

I have to make this quick because I am on deadline. But Mike Mussina seems to think that he will miss his next start but not go on the disabled list. Joe Torre said the same thing.
But the Yankees said that about Robinson Cano last year and he was out for nearly two months. Hamstrings are always worse than a team says at first.
Mussina is honest with the media and he said he didn’t think it was a big deal. For now, that’s what we have to go on.
Also, as I said a few weeks ago, Farnsworth is not a championship player. Walking the leadoff hitter on four pitches in a 1-1 game is inexcusable.

good call on farnie. that’s been the rap on him wherever he has pitched. yanks’ bullpen is deep enough that we could deal him to someone who needs help, even if we have to maybe eat some of that atrocious contract. at least colter bean throws strikes.
great job by henn tonight. he’s one of the reasons this bullpen is deep. 25 years old, lefty, throws 95 and he has developed command of his pitches. gotta love it.
amazing how if Farnsworth gives up one run he can never rebound.

Henn’s emergence is negated by Proctor and Farnsworth blowing up. Proctor I think has the guts and attitude to recover. Farns I think is a lost cause. I sure hope Henn is for real.

With the number of teams looking at themselves as contenders this season, someone is bound to be desperate for bullpen help come the all-star break. I’m thinkin the Mets and Phillies could start a bidding war, or Florida might be willing to offer some nice prospects if we’ll throw in some cash and a signed ARod jersey.
By then not only will the Wanger and Karstens be back, but Phil franchise, Sanchez and others could be ready. And apparently some guy called Roger might have signed.
Anyway plenty of depth to show Kyle the door as long as Proctor can settle into his groove again.
So now you’re going to hate on Farnsworth to prove you were right that we should have traded him for a backup catcher? He was good for three innings, and tonight he got his butt kicked. Not everyone is like Mo, and sometimes these guys will fail. I didn’t hear you say your boy Scott Proctor “wasn’t a championship player” after he got his ass handed to him by the Devil Rays and again tonight gave up the lead.
Scott had bad outings this year. Farnsworth had a bad outing tonight. Some time during the season, every single person in that bullpen is going to look bad. You can’t throw them out every time they fail.

Stormy: Nice to see somebody else joining the club of totally misrepresenting what I said. I suggested trading Farnsworth for Leiber and Coste. How’d you like to have Leiber now? Would you like him in the rotation instead of Rasner or Igawa this week?
As I have written on my blog for the better part of a year now, Farnsworth is an unreliable player. He throws the heck out of the ball but he is unavailable every few weeks because of his back and is ineffective when he pitches two days in a row.
If you want him on the mound in the 8th inning of a playoff game, good for you. I would not. If you’re a Yankee, that’s the standard.
And since when is Scott Proctor “my boy” ? If you can find me writing the words “my boy Scott Proctor” I’ll donate $100 to the charity of your choice.
Why does it seem like mussina just doesn’t tough things out? I know he mightve tweaked something that if staying in couldve made it worse, it just seems that he is extremely fragile.
Stormy, pick your battles here. I don’t agree with Pete on more than a few things but Farnsworth did this same routine last year. A few solid outings and then they get erased by a horror show like tonight.
Farnsworth is one of the few guys on this team that I can say are “losers”. Just not guys for a winning team. Even if he only gave up 1 run — acceptable. Though the 4 pitch walk to start the 8th is already a sign of what he is, his inability to maintain the game was humiliating. Give your 2-4 hitters a chance in the 9th!
I say the Yankees should trade him and cash to the Devil Rays for a decent prospect. Truth be told the yankees have the luxury of a pretty deep bullpen and some good arms in Scranton waiting to come up. I don’t think Kyle helps the club more than Beam or Britton would.
Farnsworth’s stuff is filthy, tonight notwithstanding, and pulling the cord on him over one crappy outing is foolish. I’m more worried about Proctor turning into a pumpkin (ala Chacon and Small) than I am Farns.
Mussina should be disabled for at least a month, whether he wants it or not. He’s gonna be using this injury as his fallback excuse all year long.
Henn has been by far the biggest surprise this year. Not sure where he magically got his b*lls from, but let’s hope they’re purchased and not rented.
Any word on when Karstens will be ready? Five days from now would be convenient.
Mussina fragile? Let’s not get carried away. Since 1992, Moose has average about 208 innings and 31 starts. For the Yanks, he has averaged 200 innings a year and 31 starts. You want to see fragile? Look at Pettite or Pavano.

Farns had to be taken out after it was 3-1. It was quite obvious that he had nothing. Torre had to give the offense a chance to come back in the 9th. He cant let Farns stay in there and give up 4 runs!! Especially after walking Castillo the slap hitter on 4 pitches after the Yanks busted it to keep it close for 8 innings. Yanks had 2nd and 3rd in the 9th so anything was possible. Since Bruney and Myers were warming up I dont get why Torre left Farns in there for soo long to let the game get totally out of hand.

By “your boy” I mean that you clearly like the guy, praise him every chance you get, and even at times suggest he could be a closer for this team (an idea I strongly disagree with).

And no, I would NOT want Lieber — not ahead of Rasner, Igawa or anyone else. He’s DONE. Yankee fans are delusional about Lieber. He’s not good, he wasn’t good when he was a Yankee, and he hasn’t been good in years.
Will Karstens be back in next week? He will pitch in game on Sat, right?
And Wang should throw BP Today, but just read other report, said Wang will instead pitch a simulated game ??
Just hope this will end now, see this many muscle injuries, really didn’t feel comfortable at all…

It’s not like it’s the first time he blows up in pressure situations and, here’s the big point, gives up the croocked number. By this he puts the game out of reach. He doesn’t only give away the lead, but he puts it out of reach.
In the regular season that’s not so bad, he has enough good appearances where he’s a decent reliever overall, but in the postseason, when runs are hard to come by, he’s able to give up a huge amount in very little time. Here you can’t say: well, he’s also had a lot of shutout innings, so it’s no biggie. He’s able to give away the game. That’s something you don’t want when your season hangs on that game.
I don’t want Farnsworth around come October, for the same reason I’m happy that we have Mo instead of, say, Brad Lidge.
Last night was something we saw a lot of with Farnsworth early last year. Walk the leadoff guy, usually on four pitches, then implode.
I don’t blame Torre for keeping him in there and seeing if he can get himself out of trouble. You can’t play every game like the seventh game of the World Series or your pitching staff will be shot by May.
They won the series, which is what matters.
Farnsworth? If the other guys continue to pitch well, he is a guy they can move at the deadline for additional help.
At the very least, it wouldn’t shock me if Vizcaino took his 8th inning spot soon. Luis can pitch everyday (which Farnsworth cannot), and seems better suited for that role.
I wouldnt want Lieber for a bad of balls right now. Let alone for Farnsworth.
I dont care if Igawa has to make 12 starts. Id much rather have Farnsworth in the pen than Lieber who is done.
This probably wouldn’t have come up if Joe had used the BP more effectively the night before in mop-up duty. But Joe loves to give teams a pass on the “House $” game when he should have been thinking of the sweep.

I’d lean towards patience with Farns as well - look at thenumbers this guy put up in 2005. If we get anything like that we’re golden. Every reliever is gonna have a crap outing once in a while.
Don’t really get Nate’s comments above about how the pen was used the night before. All 3 guys were pitching following a day off - Mo after 2 off. None threw so much they were unavailable - in fact Proctor & Viz did pitch again, and Mo would have had we gotten lucky.
What I can agree on is making a move within the string of hits to keep the game close. Made sense to leave Farns in for Mauer (no runs yet) and Cuddyer (righty), and he won’t be the last pitcher those 2 succeed against. But it seems Myers could have been used in his LOOGY role for Morneau (he’d been off for 2 days), then bring in Bruney for Hunter. Frankly this was a game that could have been managed like Game 7, since the Yanks had the next day off. And even down 3-1 (after Cuddyer), against Nathan the odds aren’t good, so you’ve got to stop the bleeding. Of course, had we followed this strategy & tied it up the cupboard would have been pretty bare, with only Mo (and Igawa like Pettitte last week?) left. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad in Minny.
My son’s got tix to all 3 games in Oakland this weekend - let’s hope he sees 2 or 3 wins. He’s wrestling with what Yanks jersey to buy to wear. He’s kinda old school, torn between Andy P. or Bernie. I told him to go for Mo - good weekend to wear #42. Suggestions? He won’t go for the obvious, so don’t give me 2 or 13.
You cant go wrong wearing Bernie, Andy or Mo.
